The mysterious pockets in your cat’s ears

Published

on

I am sure you have noticed the intriguing structure at the base of the outside of your cat’s ear. It is that delicate cleft that forms a small bag. Medically, this thin skin flap is known as the marginal cutaneous bag, but the name that you will hear more frequently when referring to this part of the anatomy of a cat’s ear, is Henry’s pocket.

What is the function of Henry’s pocket?

Well, the exact function is not really known, after all, cats certainly like to keep secrets, right? However, experts have possible theories. It is believed that this special ear feature helps channel the auditory channel and helps in the sound location. Henry’s pocket can also improve the ability to detect higher sounds.

The thin bag can also play a fundamental role in body language, as it could help cat’s ability to flatten the ears against the head.

The evasive origin of the name

Where the name “Henry’s Pocket” comes from is a question that remains unanswered. Maybe only cats are the guardians of that information.

Is Henry’s pocket exclusive to cats?

Cats are not the only animals with this special ears. Some dogs also have their own Henry pockets, and you can also find them in the ears of bats and midwives.

A hiding place for parasites

Due to the design of these ears, they can be the perfect hiding place for bacteria, infections and parasites. When reviewing the parasites, especially ticks, remember to inspect that small thin bag too.

If you notice that your cat scratches or insists on ears, it is time for a veterinary examination to verify whether there is infection, mites, fleas or ticks.
