In the feline world, brown tones and patterns are divided into two categories: common and rare. The brown tied coat, for example, is extremely common. Cats with a solid brown coat? Well, that’s a completely different story.

The only brown cat: Know Havana Brown

The most rare of all cats with a brown coat is Havana Brown. This is the only breed of cats that comes exclusively in brown. In fact, except for those beautiful green eyes, this race is completely brown: fur, nose, leg pads, even mustaches.

Havana’s cat developed in England during the 1950s, where fans crossed Siamese cats with black cats in search of a cat with a solid and rich brown color. Over time, reproduction efforts focused on retaining the brown color while eliminating the pointed Siamese coat. Although it is still quite rare, the race has gained popularity outside of England and can be found throughout the United States and Europe.

Other races of popular brown cats

As you can see, many cats show a brown fur pattern, come in a brown tone or, in one case, come exclusively in brown. On the other hand, many cat races do not come in a brown coat. These include Bombay, Russian Blue, Burmilla and Chartreux. The brown cat is anything but average. With so many warm variants, tones and patterns, there are more than it seems, and much to love, about each of these cats.
